Long COVID

Country:

United States of America

Target group:

Population with a previous COVID-19 diagnosis

Use case:

Long COVID, also known as ‘post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection’ (PASC), describes the persistence of symptoms or the appearance of new ones at least three months after an initial COVID-19 infection. These symptoms must last for at least two months and have no other identifiable cause. Studies estimate that Long COVID affects 10–20% of COVID-19 cases. Among the most reported symptoms are cognitive and memory difficulties, often referred to as ‘brain fog’. Research has also revealed anatomical changes in memory-related brain regions, including reductions in grey matter thickness and tissue contrast in the hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, and entorhinal cortex. Certain groups, such as women and individuals with multiple infections, are at higher risk of developing these deficits. The global burden of Long COVID has led to an international consortium of over 30 countries and the Alzheimer’s Association investigating its potential link to Alzheimer’s disease and other long-term neurological disorders. The SGMA Index could aid these efforts by analyzing correlations with a COVID-specific survey.
